WEEK ONE ➡️ THE HOOP STATE TEAM OF THE WEEK
Updated: Jan 25
WEEK 1 ➡️ MILLBROOK HIGH SCHOOl (Raleigh, NC)
Welcome to the Hoopstate Network team of the week series, where each week we will be selecting one team from the state who had the best week of basketball. Factors such as importance of victory, margin of victory, strength of opponents and rivalry/ in conference games will all be taken into account.
The first team of the week chosen is the Millbrook Wildcats. The Wildcats had two wins this week against, a rivalry win on the road against Leesville Road(80-49) and an in conference win at home against Cardinal Gibbons(77-34). This team has multiple D1 stars on the court ( Eric Van der Heijden, Silas Demary Jr.) and one still in the barrel(Redford Dunton- foot injury). These stars were in full display this week with stat book stuffing performances both games. However those individual performances are not what one them team of the week, their team cohesion and competition readiness did. This team has as good of chemistry as you could possibly expect in only the second week of the season.
MILLBROOK HIGH SCHOOL 🆚 LEESVILLE ROAD HIGH SCHOOL
This was a rivalry that was arguably the best in the state last season, 4 matchups including a conference championship and a state playoff game and a sold out crowd every time. That was not what we experienced on Friday night. Millbrook blew out a Carter Whitt absent Leesville team and the hole their former star left could certainly be felt. Now don't get me wrong this Leesville team is by no means bad, but Millbrook is on another level. They came out in a full court press and were able to stop Leesvilles offense before it even started on most occasions. On the offensive end they were just as good, van der Heijden had 29 on 7/11 from three and Demary Jr. had 27 and dished out 5 dimes.
LAST YEAR - MILLBROOK HIGH SCHOOL 🆚 LEESVILLE ROAD HIGH SCHOOL SERIES
Millbrook was back in action Friday for a 43 point win over the crusaders and it was more of the same. Their press exposes ball handlers and their size on offense overwhelmed a much smaller Gibbons team. Millbrook had four guys in double digits and shared the ball extremely well. Two of their role players in Charles Oates and CeeJay Jordan also stepped up big.
In conclusion this teams two huge margin of victories, their stars performances and rivalry win are what earned them team of the week. This Millbrook team isn’t even in full form yet and once Dunton returns to action they may be unstoppable. They are my favorite to win the 4a state championship right now and are definitely a team any NC hoops fan should have an eye on.
Team of the week honorable mention - South Granville (117-14 win over Warren County)
