WEEK 3 ➡️ Lake Norman Christian (Huntersville, NC)

Welcome back to the Hoop State's team of the week series, where we highlight the best team in North Carolina. This week I chose Lake Norman Christian.

LAKE NORMAN CHRISTIAN!!! First, back-to-back overtime wins and then a 21 point route! Lake Norman took down Word of God 72-66 and then Victory Christian 60-57. They followed those two wins up with a 75-54 win over High Point Christian Academy. They move to 15-4 on the season. Lake Normans got the hype they've got the stars, and now they've got a seven-game win streak. This team has found a new spark with their new head coach Patrick Mcarthy who lets these guys play their game, and I think it's been an enormous success. They have a fast-paced, high octane, high risk, high reward style of play. They gamble on both offense and defense, but with the athletes they have( Mikey Williams, Trey Green, Joyful Hawkins, etc.), it works. They get those passing lane steals, they make those full-court passes, and they convert those alley-oop dunks.

Their first win of the week was a Saturday showdown in Raleigh, where they played in a game that many call the NC game of the year. Their first half was not one they wanted to be as their risky playstyle wasn't paying off. They made some great plays but turned the ball over too much and let Word of God score on the fast break too easily. They trailed 37-26 at the half. The second half would be much different as Lake Norman cleans up their game. They came out hot, winning the third quarter with reliable all-around performance. They continued that success with a fourth-quarter win as well, but it wasn't quite enough to get the job done. We headed to OT, where they continued their second-half dominance and won the game 72-66. Mikey William(16pts) and Trey Green(15pts) were the difference makers in this one.

LKNC vs. Victory Christian

Their second win came Friday night in a revenge game against Victory Christian. Lake norman lost against this team a few weeks ago, 76-73 but Mikey and the squad were not going to let that happen again. This matchup was a bang-bang back and forth play type game with tons of dunks and three balls, pretty much everything you want as a fan. Both teams were able to work the inside out strategy well and pretty much went tit for tat all game long, trading an oop for an oop or a three for a three. This one was too close to finishing in regulation, so we headed to OT for the second game in a row for this Lake Norman team. It is a very low scoring OT, But all that matters was one shot Trey Greens three with one second remaining to seal the Lake Norman Victory and seal their title as the team of the week. The MVP of this game Jonathan Kurtas who had an 18 point double-double.

A Saturday afternoon matchup at High Point Christian Academy showed Lake Norman's ability to put away games. They started off battling back and forth, and you could see a bit of their fatigue from the game the night before, but they snapped out of it in the second half. They dominated the second half and won by 21 points. Their defensive effort allowed them to win this game because they could deny High Point inside. Aj Allenspach was the most impressive player in racking up 15pts, 9 boards, and 3 blocks.

All in all, a revenge game and a win over one of the best squads in NC are what earned Lake Norman Christian the title this week. This team keeps getting better, and they are on a collision course for an NCISAA title.
